  • Volkswagen to finally take the production four-cylinder power crown with 400 hp MKVIII (MK8) Golf R in 2020?

This is the rumor being pushed by AutoExpress.co.uk and they are hardly what you would call reliable. Still, it makes sense the next gen Golf R would be over four-hundred horsepower from a 2.0 liter four-cylinder.

Do not forget Volkswagen taunted AMG and said they would have the world's most powerful production four-cylinder. At that time the AMG M133 2.0 liter had 354 horsepower. Volkswagen stole the AMG engineer responsible for that motor.

In response AMG boosted M133 output to 381 horsepower for the 2016 model year and VW never challenged AMG's dominance.

Well, if this report from Autoexpress UK is correct then Volkswagen will take the production power crown with a 400 horsepower MKVIII Golf R.

We'll believe it when we see it but there is literally nothing stopping AMG from once again beating VW at their own game. They are the current champs after all.

Maybe the TTRS and RS3 will see power bumps by then, but I couldn't imagine VW/Audi will let the Golf R surpass those two.

Even if they don't bump it the 2.5 TFSI is the better powerplant.
