  • Volkswagen wants to dominate Pikes Peak with a purpose built electric hill climb car - I.D. R Pikes Peak

Apparently there is plenty of room in the Volkswagen budget to build electric hill climb race cars. VW wants to challenge for the Pikes Peak hillclimb record with the I.D. R concept you see here.

Why call it I.D. R? To promote the upcoming line of Volkswagen I.D. electric cars of course.

This is all a concept for now but VW seems quite serious hiring three time Pikes Peak champion Romain Dumas to drive it.

Competing in the most famous hill climb in the world with I.D. R Pikes Peak not only has symbolic meaning, but is also a valuable test for the general development of electric cars.
Volkswagen will likely meet their goal of setting a new record. Why? An electric motor won't be affected by the elevation. 9000 feet, 14,000 feet, whatever, it doesn't matter to the electric engine.

Hopefully they have something more to show than renderings soon.

Do the new records when matter now that this whole road is paved?

You'll have to judge based on results here on out due to that really. Can't compare pre-paved to paved.
