        Automotive forums are a double edged sword. They can be a repository of valuable information with incredibly knowledgeable and helpful members. They can also have know-it-all's who spread misinformation and think they are never wrong.


        The BoostAddict forums are worth every penny, right?

          Bruh- for serious. If it starts with "I read on the forums" or "I had it at another shop" or "I had xxxx replaced" it instantly goes to a retainer fee until we sort out what the issue is. I don't mind fixing other people's problems, but I'm not going to do it for free or cheap.

          Well, that may be the case sometimes, but for some of us, the forums are the only way some cars stay on the road. I literally cannot take my car to the dealer for anything, they’ll whine and cry about having to work on yet another E60 M5, and then they’ll find the most expensive possible way to fix the problem, since that’s all BMW has instructed them to do. Going forward, something as simple as chaffed wiring on the gear position indicator wiring harness on the SMG gearbox will now necessitate an entirely new gearbox, including the hydraulic unit, which must be over $10,000. Just in parts. Let alone labor. And then some dealers have the gall to tell some customers who, you know, don’t read the forums that “the computer requires them to also change the clutch and flywheel every time the transmission is changed” - which is nonsense and another $3k. So, yes, I will learn what I can on the forums and work on it myself. Considering I know more about the car and how it works than most people who theoretically are paid to do so, I have no problem with that.

          For sure, you make a good point.

          The post was tongue and cheek to begin with but there are those forum members who try to tell professionals how to do their job.
