  • Learning from the Phaeton? 2019 Volkswagen Arteon aims to pull Volkswagen slightly upscale

It seems Volkswagen did not learn much from their Phaeton debacle. What happened? It was priced too high and bumped up against Audi. Why would you pay a premium for a Volkswagen when you could just go get an Audi?

Well, that might happen here again and Volkswagen does not seem to understand that.

To be fair, the Arteon is priced more aggressively starting at $36,840 and quickly going to $47,705+. It is positioned as a CC replacement so Volkswagen is not kidding themselves with a $100k W12 sedan here.

Spec it correctly and you will get a 2.0 liter turbo motor with 268 horsepower going through an 8-speed automatic to all four wheels.

Is that worth $50k? Not really. Going to the Audi dealership still makes more sense. The base FWD Arteon is where the value is.
