    • Suspension software tuning the next big thing? DSCsport tuned Nissan GTR Nismo laps VIR in 2:01.5

With modern adjustable suspension systems the software settings for the hardware are obviously very important. How about improving your suspension performance with just some software changes? How about sharing those calibrations as some people share tunes?

Imagine a calibration specifically for a certain track. Great for the roadcourse guys, right?

Well, DSCsport allows exactly that. They have what they call their DSC Controller in Version 1 and 2 modules:

You install the controller and then can download various calibration maps. You can tweak the calibrations yourself as well or go with their OTS maps.

How potent are these calibrations? According to DSCsport a stock 2015 Nissan GTR Nismo with a DSCsport V1 controller and their tuning software lapped VIR (Virginia International Raceway) in 2:01.5:

I think we may be able to go 2:00 flat with a new set of Dunlop tires and nitrogen and a few mil toe out in the front. the test was done with the tires set to 30psi cold with no nitrogen; the tires were going to 43psi in 2-3 laps. we really ran the tires off the car!
For context, a 2:01.5 around VIR is nuts. If you look at Car and Driver's results in the past years Lightning Lap competition at VIR a 2:01.5 puts the DSCsport GTR 42.7 seconds ahead of the Viper ACR.

How is that possible? With just some suspension tuning the GTR destroys the Viper ACR by over half a minute? Conditions and driver skill are huge factors but it's hard to believe the DSCsport module makes that kind of difference.

EDIT: The full VIR course is not the Grand course which is the full length. That explains the massive time difference.

Here is the lap video backing up the time:

It would have been great if they did a before/after lap but we have what we have.

DSCsport offers these controllers for select Chevrolet, Porsche, Nissan, and Ford models.

Hopefully there is more independent testing of these modules and their impact on laptimes.

42 seconds? I can't help but feel this must have been on a different length of the track, that's just unfathomable.

        Exactly.

Yah, there is no freaking way thats the same track. Why would you even post that with a suggestion of it being possible?

Follow up based on 25 seconds of Googling. It is not the same track configuration. Lightning Lap runs the infield. The GPS overlay on the YouTube video shows a massive segment is cut off.

They're more tenured in the Porsche market (997 Turbo), always has top-notch review; basically the "must have" suspension upgrade if you're not doing a major coilover upgrade.

Because they said full VIR in the description and I thought the LL used the full VIR as well?

In addition to the different configuration, VIR just got repaved yet again last summer, so the lap times aren't perfectly comparable. The track is much faster now. For example, Watkins Glen saw probably 10-15% faster lap times on average after their last repaving.

I mean, I get that, but they'd be lapping the ACR every third lap with that kind of gap... some level of skepticism is necessary for a claim like that.

        We're all very skeptical.

I really don't understand your tone in your earlier posts and why you were so negative.

I agree it's a huge question mark and would like answers.

I'm just a bit surprised to see it here... This site will slam others for outlandish or unsubstantiated claims and then shares claims that there is no way can be true (and can easily be figured out with two seconds of googling). I apologise for the negativity, I just come here cause you've set the expectation for much better reporting than that.

2:01 is a full course time. The others are a GRAND course time. 2:01 is still pretty quick but not much to write home about with the new tarmac.

For comparison, my old 300 rwhp FD did it in 2:10 before the repavement
My instructors 177k mile daily and practically stock e46 m3 does it in around 2:08 after the repavement.

I then said we need to see independent results. So what is the problem? I'm raising questions. I'm not saying it is true.

Well then that explains it. Full is not grand although grand is the full length?
