    • What happened to the Fast and the Furious movies? Bloomberg examines how the movies changed from racing to action

"Ask any racer. Any real racer. It don't matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winning's winning." Everyone remembers that quote from the first Fast and the Furious movie. You know, the movie that was about street racing and the scene that surrounded it?

Well, something happened to the franchise. It shifted focus from car racing to action scenes. This was good for the box office but there is little remaining for car enthusiasts. The reason the Fast and the Furious originally appealed is that chase scenes, races, and awesome cars were the focus. The vehicle action scenes almost seem forced in the later movies.

Bloomberg posted an excellent piece detailing how things changes. Let's just take a look at a few of their data points:

You can read the full (and very well done) article here: https://www.bloomberg.com/graphics/2...t-and-furious/

At least there is room for a new movie or even franchise that is more centered around cars as the Fast and the Furious moved toward big budget action scenes and Hollywood starpower.

Has anyone watched the new trailer? It's horrible and has nothing to do with racing. We went from Honda Civics and stealing DVD players to flying helicopters, dropping bombs, and jumping million dollar cars in between buildings.

When they jumped that car between buildings I just turned the movie off. Wtf was that?

This is hilarious, I can imagine the writers reaction when he was given this assignment.
"Sorry honey, another late night at the office, need to finish counting tach shots in this decade old movie, tell little bobby goodnight"

Will have to read the full article this afternoon

Well #6 grossed a ton cause of Paul Walkers death. Wish it would get back to the basics, but still a decent mindless action movie.

Glad I stopped watching after 3. I can't believe how much money these movies make.

        +1 Agreed.

The first one was pretty good since it was all about street racing only. The second was just terrible to me. It felt like watching a parody of the first one. Then saw the third one because it primarily focused on going sideways and the car culture in Japan. It was a good movie but not the greatest. After that I just stopped watching and following the whole FnF franchise. It just got ridiculous to a point that it wasn't about racing anymore. Not at all. Just some poor junkie action movie with lots of over dramatized drama, under ground crimes, missiles and lots of explosions, senseless stunt moves and senseless story lines in each movie.

To be honest I think that FnF has kind of ruined today's car movies such as Redline, Death Race, Need for Speed, Born to Race, and many many more. I've never seen any of 'em and I will never see it, but only heard a little about it. Just look up the movie ratings and they are down right terrible. It's sad that nobody is willing to make a really decent, proper car movie like some of the classics.

        The Vanishing Point
The original 1974 Gone in Sixty Seconds (although the 2000 remake version wasn't that bad but still ...)
        Two Lane Blacktop
        Bullet
        Le Mans
        Rendezvous

        Just a few examples ...

Definitely Bloomberg as the charts actually have relevant data.

The second one was just meh. The first one definitely is the best.

I don't even count Tokyo Drift. Felt like a cheap cash grab using the Fast and Furious name. Plus it was a $#@!ty movie without the original cast.

After that I have no idea what happened.

It was $#@! from day one. Dude drives a SVT lightning, parks it and goes racing riced up Civics. Rubbish. I only watched them till Tokyo drift and the only reason i didnt throw that $#@! off the window right away was because the girl was cute and i had nothing better to do.

The acting in #1 was terrible. At least by #7 they have figured out how to act somewhat.

They should put that graph in there as well. As Car Racing goes down, Acting quality goes up.

To be fair the Lightning was the shop truck I believe. Would have been cool to see it race though.

I still have a soft spot for the Lightning.
