• DCT (dual clutch transmission) and S63TU V8 for new 2016 X6M and F15 X5M?

The X6M is getting an update which is quite clear from spyphotos published in December of last year. The question really is if the E71 chassis is getting a facelift or if this is a next generation X6 based on the F15 X5 platform. Due to the proportions being strikingly similar it is difficult to tell but considering this X6M is testing with the upcoming F15 X5M and it is camouflaged outside and inside signs point to an all new X6M model for the 2016 model year.

Styling will obviously feature minor updates and it looks like the X6 will get the new BMW sidevent behind the front wheels that is becoming a staple of the design of the next generation cars. The real important changes are under the skin though.

The shot of the interior shows what appears to be a DCT shift knob (with the M DCT symbol covered up) and shift paddles behind the steering wheel. The current X6M uses an automatic transmission so the change to a dual clutch will elevate the X6M's performance although it will be interesting to see how this affects towing capability. It is still supposed to offer some utility isn't it?

With the updated S63TU out of the M5 or some software changes to the S63 it currently has combined with some weight loss (roughly 200 pounds like the F15 X5) the new X6M should raise its performance level considerably and above its rivals. Porsche does not offer a dual clutch transmission in the Cayenne Turbo and neither does Mercedes in the ML63 AMG. BMW may be ahead of the curve here.

DCT in either of them X5M or X6M would mean I am jumping ships from AMG to M for the first time... I hope this turns out to be true...

575-600HP, DTC, and -200 pounds would be a game changer. Looking forward to the F15 X5 M..

Well it sure looks that way based on what is available.

If they do a DCT with all wheel drive and ~5000 pounds they would be the only ones in the industry that offer this combo.

It would definitely be a game changer...

You mentioned DCT affecting towing capabilities.... How might the change in trans do that?

Generally you want a torque converter automatic as the weight is easier managed by it than a manual.

You can two with either you just generally will see higher tow ratings for automatics than manuals/dct's. An auto is a bit more forgiving to driver error too.

Could have a high 11 SUV? Yes please. But to be honest if it's low 12s then the GLA45 Amg with a tune will tickle my fancy!

The GLA45 AMG will always have a big chunk of weight in its favor. The RS Q3 may end up being the best choice.

Sticky, why do you keep mentioning an update of the E71 X6? The F16 X6 is coming to market. BMWs have a 7 year product cycle, and the MY2014 E71 will be it's last.

The X6 M pictured is the new one, to be a MY2016. And introduced later this year, as the base X6 has to introduced first. The F15 X5 gets "breathing room" at its launch because it is a very important segment for BMW AG.

The X6 will have it's own launch, then the big dogs will get turned loose. Big dogs as in F15 X5 M and F16 X6 M.

I mentioned both to cover my bases. I said this will likely be a new X6 based on the F15 platform if you read the article. In case BMW decides to go cheap though it may be a refresh.

We don't have official confirmation one way or another but yes I'm leaning towards an all new F16 X6M here and that is why it is testing with the F15 X5M.
